University of Kentucky E-mail Author LESLIE DAVID BURNS is an Associate Professor of Literacy at the University of Kentucky. He is a 2013 winner of the Edwin B. Fry Award for advancement of knowledge in literacy along with co-authors Leigh Hall and Elizabeth Carr Edwards for the book Empowering Struggling Readers, and has published in such journals as Harvard Educational Review, Research in the Teaching of English, Middle Grades Research Journal, English Journal, Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy. His specializations include adolescent literacy, literacy engagement and motivation, English education, teacher education, curriculum studies, literacy policy, education standards reform, and teaching for social justice. His current research explores the nature and impact of responsive teaching methods and theories on academic success for diverse teachers and students.
