GILBERTO Q. CONCHAS obtained a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. He is Associate Professor of Education and Chancellor’s Fellow at the University of California, Irvine. Prior to UCI, Dr. Conchas was Assistant Professor at the Harvard Graduate School of Education. He most recently served as Senior Program Officer with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The focus of his research is urban school success, social inequality and education, and educational policy and reform. Numerous scholarly journals, including the Harvard Educational Review, Research in Sociology of Education, Youth & Society, and Teachers College Record, have published Dr. Conchas’ research on social equity and urban schools. He is the author of The Color of Success (2006) and the co-author of Small Schools and Urban Youth (2008). Dr. Conchas is currently working on his third book (co-authored with James Diego Vigil), StreetSmart SchoolSmart: Urban Poverty and the Education of Adolescent Boys. He has been a visiting scholar at the University of Barcelona, University of Southern California, San Francisco State University, and the University of Washington.

PEDRO E. NAVA is an advanced doctoral student at UCLA’s Graduate School of Education in the Urban Schooling division. The focus of his research is urban and rural schooling inequality, critical pedagogy, family-school engagement, and undergraduate social justice based research. Mr. Nava has been published in InterActions: UCLA Journal of Education and Information Studies and in (Eds.) Hoosain & Salili’s Democracy and Multicultural Education. Prior to attending UCLA he completed a Masters degree at Harvard’s Graduate School of Education with a specialization in administration, planning and social policy and Bachelor’s degrees from California State University at Fresno in Liberal Studies and Chicano Studies. He is currently working on a dissertation that examines how the life histories of migrant farmworking families shape their educational engagement practices in a small community in rural California.
