The standards era and the subsequent evolution of high stakes testing has led to the development of a number of packaged curricula and standards based textbooks to aid teachers in delivering the content inherit in the standards. As a result of the proliferation of standards-focused materials, the role of the teacher has evolved into one who delivers curricula rather than one who designs curricula. Unintentionally, teachers have abdicated an essential role, resulting in a curriculum that is often unconnected, unfocused, and unauthentic due to a lack of synthesis and integration. Strategic Design for Student Achievement by Michael S. Moody and Jason M. Stricker, published by Teacher’s College Press, was written “to build an instructional design model that positions teachers to be decision makers” (p. 1).
