Many years ago the actor John Houseman gave a legendary performance as Professor Kingsfield, holy terror of the Harvard Law School in the 1973 film The Paper Chase. While he was almost certainly exaggerating for the purposes of entertainment, Houseman’s portrayal of the signature pedagogy of the law school classroom was rooted in a particular approach to legal education—the case study method—to which his students had to adapt or fail. Whether or not the law is (or ever really was) taught the way it is portrayed in this film, it is certainly the case that most academic disciplines have something that approaches a common or at least widely accepted approach to pedagogy. The degree to which “common” and “widely accepted” rise to the level of a “signature pedagogy” is one of the several important issues raised by the authors of Exploring Signature Pedagogies.
