I believe it is a book that should be read by anyone who is concerned with the future of the field of early childhood education (or what the authors choose to call, early care and education). Ready or Not has the potential to elicit strong reactions among its readers, which is, I believe, one of the books major strengths. The authors write that, Our straightforward language may be perceived as unnecessarily provocative...To some, we may come across as overly critical or underappreciative of work currently in progress. Still others may personalize our comments and take offense (pp. 8-9). Serving as a sample of one, I think their assessment about the potential reader reaction to parts of the book is accurate.

University of Cincinnati E-mail Author DAVID KUSCHNER is an associate professor of early childhood education in the College of Education, Criminal Justice, and Human Services. His research interests include children’s play, constructivism, and the history of early childhood education. His most recent publication is titled, “Children’s play in the journal, Young Children: An analysis of how it is portrayed and why it is valued,” which appeared in Investigating play in the 21st century: Play and Culture Studies, Volume 7, published by University Press of America. I am currently serving as editor of Play and Culture Studies, Volume 8 and am co-authoring a book that takes a Problem-Based Learning approach to historical issues in early childhood education.
