Disclaimer: I have been a fan of Howard Becker since we first met at a workshop sponsored by the American Educational Research Association in the late 60s. Becker was one of the instructors. At a break during the proceedings I shared with him the vexsome problem I was having, trying to sort the huge amount of data from my ethnographic study of one elementary school principal. He immediately diagnosed my problem and responded, “If you are having trouble sorting data, you must be trying to take two steps instead of one. Sorting should be simple. Start building theory later.” His diagnosis was absolutely right, and I realized I should be paying close attention to this man. I have taken many opportunities to do just that ever since. That has found me looking at Chicago school teachers, at a marijuana smoker among jazz musicians, at deviants, at medical students, at scholarly... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
