Ben Shapiro’s Brainwashed is a big, juicy bite of controversy, but the meat of his argument is too rare. In fact, some might criticize the 20 year-old Shapiro (at the time of this book) by suggesting that he stew over the substance of his assertions a few more years. His ideas, while clearly persuasive to his mind, are not borne out through reputable research and scholarly analysis. His argument remains developmentally age-appropriate—starkly black and white—and it does not do justice to the discussion he seeks to engage. Brainwashed is nothing more than a far right-wing propaganda piece, haggardly alleging an ultra-liberal infestation of American postsecondary teaching and a zombie-like acquiescence by students. Shapiro begins by attempting to illustrate the exacerbation of liberal metastases among our universities. As he puts it on page 5, “Liberal Democrats dominate the university scene.
