School choice is one such issue. Take the following scenario for example. A candidate for State Superintendent of Schools in South Carolina had a rather ambitious school choice voucher plan as a part of her platform. In crude and passé terminology, vouchers should have played well in a red state. However, her opponent went on the offensive by calling the plan a $500,000,000 voucher tax, and, of course, a tax plays even worse in a red state. So, it is no surprise that the school choice candidate was defeated in the election.
This anecdote relays that the politics of school choice are still quite contentious and, further, that the debates around school choices possible benefits and drawbacks are far from settled.
