The goal of this book, according to authors Sheldon Marcus and Philip Vairo, is “to provide a road map for success so that parents can be fully prepared to maximize their children’s educational prospects” (p. xv). To that end, they have chosen to cover a variety of topics, “hot-button issues,” organized in six parts. Titles of the chapters in each section are posed as questions for readers to answer. Part I, “The Teacher and the Principal,” addresses the following questions: “Are You Happy with Your Child’s Classroom Teacher?”; “Is Your Child’s Principal a Real Leader?”; “Male Teachers in the Primary Grades: Where Are They?”; “Should Parents Play a Role in the Selection, Promotion, Compensation, and Dismissal of Teachers and Principals?” Part II, “Classroom Management and Organization,” covers these issues: heterogeneous vs. homogeneous grouping, promotional policies, classroom discipline, homework, and “Children with Special Needs: Where Do They Fit In?” Part III,... Konzal) of How Communities Build Stronger Schools (Palgrave-Macmillan, 2002) and Making Our High Schools Better: How Parents and Teachers Can Work Together (St. Martinís Press, 1999).
