Demographic projections have indicated for some time now that white people in the U.S. will increasingly lose majority racial status. Does this loss of numerical dominance necessarily portend a loss of privilege? How will white people experience and negotiate this reversal of status? What alterations in racial meanings and understandings will result, and will they augur well or ill for the future of our increasingly multicultural society? Such timely and intriguing questions are addressed in Edward Morris’ ethnography of “white kids” in a predominantly non-white urban middle school in Texas. The central argument of the book is built around a productive tension between the reproduction of white privilege by educators and the disruption of the expected meanings and boundaries of whiteness by youths.
