Grappling With Diversity: Finding a Place for Religious Studies in Public Education

Our article discusses the need for required religious studies courses in America’s public schools as well as certified religious studies teachers. In a cantankerous and highly diverse religious country, citizens need basic content and critical skills to better appreciate and respect the religious other. The required UK religious studies curriculum is suggested as a possible model to begin necessary public conversations on our proposal.

    BEA BAILEY is a professor of education in the Eugene T. Moore School of Education at Clemson University where she teaches courses in secondary curriculum and instruction. Her research interests include 1) Appalachian religions, literature, history and cultures; 2) place-based education; 3) democratic schooling; and 4) religious studies curricula and teacher certification. Several of Bea’s recent publications have appeared in the Religion section of the 2006 Appalachian Encyclopedia published by University of Tennessee Press.
