Reclaiming the Game should be required reading for college presidents and anyone else worried about the way professional sports ideology is oozing into all levels of college athletics.  The book by William Bowen and Sarah Levin follows up the important work of The Game of Life written by Bowen & James Shulman which shows how academically prestigious colleges and universities have allowed athletic ambition to undermine academic principles.  The Game of Life was intended to prove the existence of an academic–athletic divide and an athletic disorder; Reclaiming the Game is a prescription for the tough medicine it would take to cure them. He is the author of the essay “Let’s Bring Back the Teacher-Coach” in the October 17, 2003, edition of The Chronicle of Higher Education.
