Almost two centuries have passed since portions of a pamphlet by the Frenchman, Marc-Antoinne Jullien (1775-1848) were published in the very first volume of The American Journal of Education (Vol. 1, July 1826) with the express purpose of “compiling an account of the state of education” in a world that was then the collection of European states and the United States.  The first era of globalization was some decades ahead and the ages of industrialization, the atom, space, and information technology were all hardly imaginable to progressive educators in the 19th century. Such was the birth of comparative education, although it required the systematic work of many scholars in the early 20th century to make it visible and disciplined.
