Publishing in TCR

An overview of the types of materials currently considered for publication by the Teachers College Record.

The Teachers College Record publishes a variety of scholarly materials in all areas of the field of education.  The editors may invite contributions from particular authors and about particular topics, but most material appearing in the journal is submitted for anonymous peer review by scholars from around the world.  The TCR publishing program currently welcomes unsolicited submissions in the following formats.


Feature articles are typically full-length papers running thirty pages or more. Both empirical and theoretical papers are considered, but papers that combine well developed theoretical frameworks with careful empirical work are particularly appreciated. Feature articles may contain research, analysis, and commentary. TCR invites submissions utilizing all methods of inquiry, and all topics related to the field of education, broadly conceived, are welcome. Feature articles are considered for both online and print publication. Online features can take advantage of the variety of media made possible through electronic publishing, including the use of audio, video, complex or dynamic graphic displays, interactive sessions, performances, and other means to improve the communication of scholarly work. Features may be presented as a single article or in serial form.  


The field of education naturally engenders strong feelings among all those affected, including the scholars who study it. The Teachers College Record invites commentaries from scholars, policy makers, educators, and others with an interest in the field. Commentaries are original opinion pieces or analyses dealing with issues and events of concern to scholars working in the field of education. These articles typically run from 1000 to 1500 words. Commentaries are reviewed internally and externally for rapid publication online.



With the pace of research and reporting hastening, the editors of Teachers College Record invite scholars to submit research notes to share the results of their current investigations with colleagues in the most timely way. Research Notes include reports of the results of empirical inquiry, discussions of methodological issues, and scholarly analyses. Research Notes can contain tables of results or other data displays from quantitative analyses or vignettes and other excerpts from qualitative studies. Typically running 2000 to 3000 words, Research notes are reviewed both internally and through external anonymous peer review for online publication.


From time to time researchers in the field of education discover technical reports of recent research that capture their interest. Such reports often become underground classics, resources relied upon by a group of researchers working in a particular area. The Teachers College Record is interested in hosting such reports online when they are brought to our attention by authors, sponsoring organizations, or readers. These reports do not move through the Teachers College Record editorial process and are thus not "published" in the traditional sense. Nonetheless, they are key resources that deserve broader distribution. Work featured as a technical report may subsequently be submitted for peer review and publication.
