As this is a review of a second edition book, it is appropriate to consider any changes from the previous edition. This edition reflects updates that have been made to the 2002 edition, Standards for Initial Teacher Training and Induction. The standards are used to determine whether a newly qualified teacher in the UK has completed his induction period satisfactorily. These updated standards, which serve as a basis for professional development, are applied to trainees and newly qualified teachers (NQTs) of children ages 3-8 in this book. In keeping with the organization of the Standards document, O’Hara arranges the chapters of this book in the same fashion, accordingly: Professional Values and Practice, Knowledge and Understanding, and Teaching. The author aims to couch the book within the broad domain of teacher professionalism. Such a domain has relevancy in the U.S. given recent debates concerning teacher quality and the prominence of teacher professional standards.
