Classroom discipline is a term with varied and shifting connotations. The authoritarian and repressive nature of discipline in an earlier period gave way to demands for greater freedom for children and youth as efforts were made to foster self-discipline. In recent years, the permissive character of our society and of some schools appears to have led to cries for a return to the rigid controls of an earlier period. Evidence as to low levels of student achievement, disruptive behavior, and vandalism in schools is cited by some as reason for more restriction and control in schools. In this context, Tanner has provided a timely, unique, and multifaceted treatment of classroom discipline. It is not only interpretive of the many meanings of the term; it is also revealing of the centrality of discipline to the whole of education.
