Often times when I visit schools here in the New York City area, I have to pass through a metal detector, allow my bag to be searched, submit my driverís license, sign-in with the police officers assigned to the school, and get issued a pass that has to be visible at all times. This hassle seems odd given that violence is a relative statistical rarity in schools and, generally speaking, schools are safe places (Anderson, et al., 1999; Donohue, Shiraldi, and Zeidenberg, 1998).††How did it get to this point?† Why were these organizations no longer the comforting, inviting and relatively open places I remember as a kid? † Many of these recent safety measures can be traced to the school rampage shootings of the late 1990s.
