Our educational system, as a whole, has been doing its job of socializing the young of this country by providing them with a standard curriculum that is based on a single concept of culture-mainstream or Anglo-American culture. Every year teachers graduate from our teacher-training institutions and take the educational torch that is passed on to them by senior teachers. This torch is the responsibility to provide an environment for the education and socialization of the youngsters who enter their classrooms. The environment has usually been tailored to the standard curriculum, which has been geared primarily to the development of a culturally homogeneous group of pupils (through the assimilation process) and the perpetuation of the "melting pot" syndrome. This aim, however, runs counter to the reality of the composition of the population of the United States, as we are not, were not, and will never become a culturally homogeneous people. We are...
