The title of David Bensman's book --Central Park East and Its Graduates-- summarizes its story. Central Park East (CPE), as I am sure almost everyone reading this review knows, is the small public school in East Harlem, New York, begun in 1974 by a group of teachers who had definite opinions about education and who intended to offer outstanding public schooling to urban youth who seldom received it.  In the Foreword to the book, Deborah Meier, one of the original CPE teachers and the schools first director, notes that "more than 100 offspring schools have been born in New York City, carrying out the CPE idea in their own often very different ways" (p. ix). CPE led to the well-known Central Park East Secondary School, and, I suspect, stories of the set of CPE efforts have influenced school teachers and principals across the country.  In this book David Bensman reports on the outcomes of the early years of the school, as seen through the lives...
