When Discourses Collide: An Ethnography of Migrant Children at Home and in School, by Marianne Exum Lopez, is a volume in Peter Lang’s Rethinking Childhood series, edited by Joe Kincheloe and Janice Jipson. In this publication resulting from her doctoral dissertation research, Lopez provides a detailed analysis of how three migrant children’s academic lives have been adversely affected by the failure of schools to address their needs. The study serves as an excellent introduction to the sorts of cultural conflicts that typically arise in so many public schools today, where mainstream, middle-class values predominate to the point where teachers and administrators are culturally blind, incapable of appropriately contextualizing what they perceive as either individual or cultural deficiency in their students. In some ways similar to Valdés’ (1996) study of Latino children and education, Lopez accurately ties school issues to cultural differences, allowing the reader to come to know and sympathize with the boys and their school experiences, to recognize where and how the differences between the home...
