In the Preface the author, Ellen Rose, complains of the two sharply divided positions in the dialogue about the use of computers in education: "eager proponents or angry deriders….there appears to be no reasoned middle ground" A reader might infer that she will try to evaluate and discuss both sides while proceeding in that middle ground. The author’s experience and background indicates she could give the subject a balanced assessment. She worked for programming firms and wrote software, and she is now a Lecturer in Education at the University of New Brunswick. Moreover, she appears to be well read in the field. An impartial view of the good and the bad of educational computing would be welcome, but regrettably she does not seem to be unbiased and spends the rest of the book denouncing information technology and educational computing. She has virtually nothing positive to say about either. Having herself previously been an admitted "hypester" of educational computing who now apparently has seen the error of her...
