As sometimes happens when academics are requested to work within particular structural or thematic parameters, they tend to go astray. Such is the case in Keith Sullivan's edited volume, Education and Change in the Pacific Rim: Meeting the Challenges. This volume brings together the work of thirteen authors who write eleven chapters that focus on educational policies and change in geographic settings that are part of the "necklace" of the Pacific Rim. Sullivan notes in his introduction that he requested his authors to address the concept of the Pacific Rim and discuss its currency in educational terms in its particular setting. Several of the authors took this charge seriously and truly grappled with the Pacific Rim concept and its relevance for educational policy and practice in their respective settings. Had they all followed this guideline, the volume would be more thematically coherent. As it stands the volume could be characterized as disappointing in terms of addressing this theme.
