Can we remove the weight of stones
Which unexamined weigh far too much
Upon our shoulders as we unsmiling
Uphill toil, openly begrudging our
Constant common chore.
No, not that one. She's mad. A fool.
Longer than the rest of us she's leaned
Again into her boulder, yet never aged a day.
Some say her secret's in her smile when
Straining she begins her upward course anew.
Her stone is greater, larger too. Somehow
The very mystery of her, her smile,
And wearing cheerfulness gall the rest of us.
It's as if she alone has looked—and sees the
Task of our collective treasured past ahead.
