Mickelson, Roslyn Arlin University of North CarolinaE-Mail authorROSLYN ARLIN MICKELSON is Professor of Sociology and Public Policy at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She also has appointments in the interdisciplinary program in Women & Gender Studies and Information Technology. Mickelson’s research focuses upon the political economy of schooling and school reform, particularly the relationships among race, ethnicity, gender, class, and educational organization, processes, and outcomes. She has investigated school reform in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools since 1988 focusing on the ways integration and resegregation influenced educational equity and academic achievement. Her coedited book Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow. The Past, Present, and Future of (De)segregation in Charlotte will be published in 2015 by Harvard Education Press. Elizabeth Stearns, Neena Banerjee, Stephanie Moller & Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2015 This study investigates the association between two aspects of organizational culture (professional community and teacher collaboration), teacher control over school and classroom policy, and teacher job satisfaction. Martha Cecilia Bottia, Elizabeth Stearns, Roslyn Arlin Mickelson, Stephanie Moller & Ashley Dawn Parker - 2015 This study examines the influence of high school exposure to basic science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) courses, high school exposure to STEM-related environment and activities, high school quantity of exposure to precollege STEM classes, and the quality of the latter for a sample of college-bound North Carolina students’ intent to major in STEM and likelihood of declaring a STEM major. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2010 In this essay, Roslyn Arlin Mickelson introduces the set of three special issues about the effects of school and classroom composition on educational outcomes. The 22 articles in the set report new research on the relationship of racial and socioeconomic composition to math and science outcomes (Vol. 112, No. 4); to verbal achievement, discipline, and high school graduation (Vol. 112, No. 5); and to intergroup relations and adult life course trajectories (Vol. 112, No. 6). She suggests why the findings have implications for public policy and educational practice. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson & Bobbie J. Everett - 2008 This article describes neotracking, a new form of tracking in North Carolina that is the outgrowth of the state’s reformed curricular standards, the High School Courses of Study Framework (COS). Neotracking combines older versions of rigid, comprehensive tracking with the newer, more flexible within-subject area curricular differentiation to form an overarching, multilevel framework for high school curricula. Jean Anyon, Ratna Ghosh & Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2007 An introduction to the special issue on New Perspectives on Youth Development and Social Identity in the 21st Century. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2003 In this article I seek to answer the question, "When are racial disparities in education the result of racial discrimination?" To answer it I synthesize the social science research on racially correlated disparities in education. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2002 Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 2000 A commentary on the education of incarcerated African American adolescents. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson - 1999 The author considers the example of IBM's participation in school reform initiatives in Charlotte, North Carolina, to frame a discussion of the broader issues concerning business involvement in education. Roslyn Arlin Mickelson & Kathryn Borman - 2007 Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Teachers College Record
