An introduction to vol. 50, no. 5, a series of articles on some of the curriculum problems which currently engage the attention of all thoughtful teachers and asministrators.

An introduction to this issue of The Record. The seven articles in this issue attempt to picture something of the “motion of bodies,” the “action of forces…producing or changing their motion,” and “the moving moral, as well as physical, forces” currently evident in the teaching of English and foreign languages in American high schools and colleges.

WHAT are the relationships of the objectives of democracy and of total war; how meet immediate war needs and at the same time develop the effective citizenry required for the world after war; how coordinate the educational efforts of the various school, social, and governmental agencies in the interests of the well-integrated individual; how coordinate these efforts in the continuous development of the individual as child, youth, and adult; how best study the present emergency with a view to developing needed insights regarding education after the war—these were the problems which were central in the thinking of the conference as it addressed itself to the study of "A Sound Program for Education Today."

The addresses in this issue of The Record by Professor Briggs, Bryson, Forkner, Brownell, and Strayer were presented at Teachers College during American Education Week, around the theme Education for National Defense.
