In addition to capturing how teaching and learning unfolds over time, it may also be useful to get several different perspectives on a single activity. In Jennifer Myers' website, video clips focusing on her work with several different students during  the reader’s conference portion of the day are embedded in a series of clips showing the basic structure of her readers’ workshop. Viewing the same interaction across multiple students allows audiences to see in depth what happens during the readers' conference and to see how Myers differentiates her literacy instruction.

9am:Readers' Workshop Mini-lesson
Myers reads "Strega Nona" aloud. She asks students to look for connections between this book and others they've read.
9:15-9:30am: Guided Reading Group
Guided reading group re-reads a book, Myers does a running record for a student, and then the whole group reads a new book.

9:30-10:15: Individual Reading Conferences
Myers asks each student to read an excerpt of the book they've chosen for independent reading time, and gives praise and feedback.
10:15-10:30: Sharing Text-to-Text Connections
After students have finished independent reading time, Myers asks them to share the text-to-text connections they identified.

An exhibition slide show and accompanying discussion (pdf) address 3 questions:

  • What aspects of teaching and learning can best be represented using multimedia?
  • How can those aspects be represented with multimedia most effectively?
  • How can multimedia representations of teaching and learning be used to support teachers’ development?
