|This is the research one would expect from the American Enterprise Institute, an arm of the Bush administration, an advocate of one-dimensional standardized testing accountability, and an enemy of so-called "progressive" education (a term used deliberately to conjure up images of classrooms in which anything goes and kids "do their own thing").|
Schools require leadership models with a different approach than the business models these authors recommend, but their conservative bias favors a top-down, punitive accountability model that is starved of any real understanding of how kids learn and how to best assess such learning.
Yes, the bias of much of what educational leaders read in administrative courses favors a progressive approach. That's because the old industrial or corporate model is clearly bankrupt. Providing school leaders with a "balanced" approach is to advocate for nothing. Actually, what our authors really want is their values, not a balance. And it's not helpful to have this agenda thinly veiled behind the research they have done.
In the end, it comes down to what values one holds to, and the American Enterprise Institute will always be on the far right of the spectrum. As a voice to be considered, that's OK, but it's out of step with what educators know is best for kids.
