SBRandf drop out rartes

Posted By: Ronda Adams on August 4, 2004

Dear Gordon,
I am still collecting my results on the correlation between standards-based reform and dropout rates in Yolo county. My baseline data shows that the students in Yolo county have a higher dropout rate ( 14%) than the state average (11%) and that the majority of students in Yolo County perform below proficiency on the 2003 CAHSEE, exit exam for the state. The gate keeper for the Yolo students is low perfromance on mathematics which is the focus of my study. I am providing standards-based professional development in mathematics for teachers teaching mathematics standards for grades 5 through algebra I. My question is does standards-based instruction effect studnet perfromance on standards-based high stakes tests.
There is evidence from Texas that dropout rates increased due to standards-based testing and there is also effidence of increased dropout rates in New York.
Let me know if i can be of any further assitance. I will be finished with my research in February of 2005.
