poor learners in rural areas

Posted By: sipho hlabane on April 6, 2005

I am studedent taecher in university of lompopo in South Africa. most of the schools in South Africa are rural schools with learners from disadvantage backround. As a teacher to be it means there are 90 percent chnces that I might teach in rural schools. trully speaking, I would like to teach in rural school as I also attended a rural school. But my concern is some of these learners walk long distaces to school, some come to school with empty stomach as they cannot afford a proper breakfast.

To add more, the environment in the school is also not conjusive, the classes are also crowded as there is shortage of classroom. so my concern, how are we expected to teach in such condition. some of the schools dont even have laboratories. Can you please give me advice on how to teach a learner who is hungry ar a learner who come to school tired? How can you teach scince withoout resources? how use outcomes based education in over crowded classroom? may teachers who have experience in teaching in this conditions share theier experinces.
