If a teacher agreed to do eight home visits, he or she would be excused from what amounted to an eight-hour required presence during Parent-Teacher Conference Night. I was intrigued by this deal, since, being a ninth grade teacher, I often had to struggle to get parents to show up at Parent-Teacher Conference Night. I thought this would be a way to connect with my students and their families in a much more intimate venue. There was a requirement that we had to do these home visits in pairs, so I recruited a veteran science teacher who was willing to join me, and we set off.
