The publication of Gettin’ My Word Out is timely for two reasons. It is apt that the 40th anniversary of 1968—a year renowned in part for student activism—should invite a fresh look at the social and political expression of young people. And it is poignant that the focus of this book, on peace education, is as desperately needed today as it was 40 years ago.   This slim monograph is not, however, about the next iteration of yesteryear’s student movements. The young people that populate Leonisa Ardizzone’s book are inner-city urban youth—largely Black and Latino/a young people in high school and recently graduated, but not college-bound. In cities across the United States, urban adolescents and young adults are participating in out-of-school activities such as those described in this book.     EVA GOLD is a founder and principal of Research for Action, a Philadelphia based non-profit that conducts research and evaluation of educational programs to improve opportunities and outcomes for all children. She has been a principal investigator in both local and national studies focusing on the dynamics among families, communities and schools, and on the building of civic capacity to support school reform.
