It is apt that the 40th anniversary of 1968a year renowned in part for student activismshould invite a fresh look at the social and political expression of young people. And it is poignant that the focus of this book, on peace education, is as desperately needed today as it was 40 years ago.
This slim monograph is not, however, about the next iteration of yesteryears student movements. The young people that populate Leonisa Ardizzones book are inner-city urban youthlargely Black and Latino/a young people in high school and recently graduated, but not college-bound. In cities across the United States, urban adolescents and young adults are participating in out-of-school activities such as those described in this book. And, as the author points out, these non-schools settings are often places where informal education is both transformative and transforming. Participants in... Research for Action E-mail Author EVA GOLD is a founder and principal of Research for Action, a Philadelphia based non-profit that conducts research and evaluation of educational programs to improve opportunities and outcomes for all children. She has been a principal investigator in both local and national studies focusing on the dynamics among families, communities and schools, and on the building of civic capacity to support school reform. She has had a particular interest in the role of community and youth organizing groups for school reform and led a team of adults working over several years with youth researchers to investigate changes occurring at their high schools. She recently authored (with others from Research for Action) A Philadelphia Story: Building Civic Capacity for School Reform in a Privatizing System, in which youth organizing is one case study.
