Rarely do we find a company that will publish research reports of the kind presented in the monograph Teacher Evaluative Standards and Student Effort. We are fortunate that someone still takes a chance on publishing a book that, while important to the field, is unlikely to be a blockbuster. Because I say that the book is important, I do not mean to imply that I endorse the whole. I do not. But the topic is a critical one, well explored and well presented. Natriello and Dornbusch describe a series of six studies that tested out various elements of a formal theory of evaluation in organizations. More specifically, as the title implies, they studied the relationships between characteristics of high school teachers’ evaluations of students’ social behavior and schoolwork and the amount of effort those students put into their schoolwork.
