Writing has long been the neglected child of the English department—Cinderella before the ball. While writing instruction accounts for a major portion of the work done in university English departments, they have been extremely slow to encourage research in writing. Teaching writing might be one of those unfortunate necessities of academic life, but studying writing was surely a waste of intellectual resources. Education departments have similarly focused language arts research almost exclusively on reading. As a result, research in writing has gotten off to a slow start.
