In their ground-breaking text The Study of Teaching, Dunkin and Biddle noted that “research on teaching is as yet a young science . . . [and that] our dream is of an educational system whose procedures are governed by research and by theories that are empirically based.“1 Positing the question “What do we really know about teaching?” they answered, and not with a little chagrin, that “most of the questions they [those interested in teaching] will ask have yet to be studied at all, and much of the research on teaching conducted so far does not provide adequate answers.“2 A tremendous amount of progress in educational research has been made since Dunkin and Biddle’s observation.
