In the past decade, Israel's main political and moral dilemma has been described as a need to choose between a particularistic commitment to being a Jewish–Zionist state and the universalistic commitment to being a Western-style democracy (Shafir & Peled, 2002). In a simplistic manner, one could argue that while accepting the Jewish ideal often means excluding Palestinians and other non-Jewish people from equal citizenship, the second option, highlighting the democratic aspirations of the state, could undermine the Jewish-Zionist ideology by making Israel a state of all its citizens. But between these two extreme descriptions lies a reality of many compromises, each seeking to achieve both social justice and communal national identity. The reality, as it goes, is much more complex than the ideology, presenting delicate and powerful dilemmas within the unique social Israeli scene.
