To Remain an Indian is an excellent book on so many levels that it is difficult to know how to begin a review of it. It is an important book that should be read carefully by everyone who has any role in Native American education or who has any other influence over Native American life—government policy makers, social workers, tribal leaders, and every American who votes for policy makers. Moreover, it should not merely be read, but carefully attended to. The key point of the book—if I may be permitted a bit of reductionism—which is very clearly stated on page xxii, is that “U.S. society and government were not…simply vacillating through ‘swings of a pendulum’ between tolerance and intolerance. Each generation was working out, in a systematic way, its notion of a safety zone, an area where dangerously different cultural expressions might be safely domesticated and thus neutralized.” The series foreword by...
