The authors have undertaken a very ambitious task–to make the case that “nuanced understanding of diversity that includes gender and gender cultured competence is a key variable for doing effective philanthropy” (p. 6). They also aim to introduce two concepts–deep diversity and discovering “Norm”–that they assert are key to improving a foundation’s practices toward becoming effective.  The book contains quite a lot of very good information, frameworks, and references that support the value of gender-specific grant making. They do a very good job of distinguishing what they consider appropriate and effective gender-based grant making from what foundations are largely doing today that supposedly serves minorities, women, disadvantaged people, etc.  They also illustrate the challenge that executive leadership and trustees have in keeping an organization’s attention to diversity.  The strength and value of these sections of the book are somewhat diminished by the organization of the book and the authors’ failure...
