Beyond the Boundaries of Physical Education appears at a time when scholars have begun to ask searching questions about the future of physical education in public schools. Some reports go as far as to suggest that physical education is in crisis and increasingly is being marginalized within the school curriculum. The glamour of media sport, the discovery of the postmodern body, the traditionalism of teachers and the ever-present squeeze on curriculum time have all been proposed as sources of the crisis. For Laker, the causes of this crisis are that physical educators have for too long clung to a now outmoded traditional role as expert teachers of sports skills, while the emerging need in troubled times is for physical education to contribute to "the complete development of the individual." Laker argues that "disturbing and menacing cultural misdemeanors" overshadow us as we enter the new millennium.
