James Duderstadt writes a very interesting book on the current state of affairs in intercollegiate athletics in America today. While most of the current articles that are exploring big time athletic corruption take the athletic programs to task for the state of college athletics, James Duderstadt takes a step back from his role as a college administrator to critically analyze the situation. He looks at the complexity of the three internal major university administrative forces and the primary external organization. Internally there is a shared responsibility that has been forsaken by the faculty, the governing board, and most importantly the president of the university. There is enough anecdotal evidence and historical documentation to present a case of neglect by the people at the university who have been charged with safekeeping the higher educational system. In the early 1980s college athletics enjoyed a tremendous growth that was unchecked by the internal forces that were placed there for the purpose of control.
