Reading Teacher (The)

The Reading Teacher is a peer-reviewed professional journal published for those interested in children's literacy learning. Eight issues per year are sent to an audience of preschool and elementary teachers, reading specialists, administrators, and teacher educators. Each issue includes effective teaching tips, insights into theory, research findings, and reviews of children's literature.

The Reading Teacher aims to take a proactive stance towards forces that are impinging on literacy education at the turn of the century: apprasing and extending the profession, promoting literacy worldwide, embracing pluralism, transforming teaching, owning technology, and connecting with the community.

The Reading Teacher welcomes submissions in three categories: articles, teaching reading, and filler submissions.

Articles should be:

  • about practical, theoretical, or research topics
  • 1,000 to 6,000 words
  • no more than 20 double-spaced pages original
  • and not published elsewhere.

    Teaching Reading submissions:
  • are brief (up to 2,000 words)
  • have a single focus
  • have content that is easily applied in a classroom
  • and are original, not published elsewhere.

    Filler submissions should be no more than 500 words and may take the following forms:
  • annotated bibliographies of articles or Web sites on a topic
  • adult reflections on literacy through poetry or vignettes
  • cartoons or other graphics related to literacy
  • and children’s writing, drawings, or quotations (all children’s work requires written permission from a parent or guardian).
