Even those who attempt grading as a science have the discussions this posting suggests...at least I hope they do. In some places the status quo is to treat assessment as a recursive practice where assessment means assessing the assessors and their tools as well as questioning assumptions about assessment as art or science or whatever. Personally, I'd like to teach a Peter Elbow-type writing course. Would that be the best practice for all cases?
