Becoming a teacher

Posted By: Mary Blomquist on March 12, 2003
Dear Mr. Pande,

I am glad to hear that you are hoping to become a primary school teacher. Although first trained as a teacher,
I was in business for a few years and came back to education. I believe that, despite the stress involved,
teaching is a deeply rewarding career. As for how to make the change, here in Kansas City the Ewing Marion
Kauffman Foundation has established the Teaching Fellows Program whereby professionals such as yourself who
have degrees lack training and certification can experience on-the-job training with evening and summer classes to
become certified. I would also highly recommend that you spend several days in a primary classroom to be sure
you understand the role of teachers in schools today. I would also recommend that you read a wonderful book on
teaching called The Courage to Teach by Parker J. Palmer. Good luck! Mary Blomquist
