Anything the Disability Services office learns is kept completely confidential. Students may be expelled, but FERPA forbids telling family members what precipitated the expulsion. Students are provided with referral information about services available to them away from campus, but cannot be told that they are in danger and should use this information.
Privacy rights are important in our society, but I believe that universities and colleges should have an obligation to the safety of their campus communities and to the communities where they are located. As a society, we need to reconsider the relationship between privacy and mental illness.
