Preparing teachers

Posted By: Jim Vandergriff on November 7, 2000
We need to direct students toward a textbook understanding of the problem -- teach them about it -- and then, through carefully mentored field experiences, including student teaching, introduce them practically and personally to the barriers. Just sending them to observe isn't enough; preservice teachers need an experience like Peace Corps or the old Teacher Corps during which they live for an extended period in the neighborhoods and work in the schools where these conditions exist. I don't think this should be voluntary. All preservice teachers should experience it. At the very least, I think they would then be less able to blame the victims when they go back to their suburban schools.
