New Method of Teaching Modern Languages: A Reading Course in German for Secondary Schools

by Leopold Bahlsen — 1903

We are to treat here of what is known in Germany as the Lektürekanon. By that is understood an established list of works in the curriculum of every higher school which must be read in the various classes; or, in a somewhat broader sense, a list of authors from which before the beginning of each semester the instructor has to choose the material for class and private reading. The higher authorities, das Königliche Provinzialschul-Kollegium, but above all else the Lehrpläne and Lehraufgaben for higher schools in Prussia, published by the Kultusministerium (the most recent are dated 1901), give general directions for such selection, indicate certain authors which under no circumstances are to be overlooked, also control new proposals, but allow the individual instructor to some degree a freedom of choice. Especially in modern foreign language teaching it is not thought advisable, for the present at least, to diminish to too great an extent a certain variety in the reading. In practice the matter is generally so arranged, that in the separate schools a special conference of Fach-teachers in the various classes is called from time to time, who shall determine to what extent the Lektürekanon is to be modified or supplemented. Their resolutions are made public in the curriculum of the institution, and this curriculum is laid for approval before the Provinzialschul-Kollegium, which in turn determines whether the selection as decided upon is suited to the class of school in question, and whether it coincides with the directions given by the government.
