New Methods of Teaching Modern Languages: Pronunciation

PHONETIC TRANSCRIPTION Johan Storm, Professor of Romance and English Philology at the University of Christiania, in a country whose educational system has entered upon rapid advancement and where the "Quousque tandem method" has numerous advocates, Johan Storm in his most favorably known book, Die lebende Sprache, says: "As long as the teachers of modern foreign languages are wanting in sufficient insight and clear understanding of the proper production and utilization of speech-sounds, their instruction in accurate pronunciation will be a mere groping about in the dark." Hence he recommends for teachers a thorough study of sound-physiology, of phonetics.
