Alan Cottrell died on January 3, 1984, at age 48, while Ernst Behler was still working on this review. Alan Cottrell’s 1976 book on Faust was already animated by the conviction that Goethe was of direct importance to the spiritual—intellectual, scientific, moral, religious—problems of our time. Cottrell believed that Goethe’s world view was every bit as pertinent in our age as it was in the nineteenth century and that its full potential was yet to be realized. It was this attitude that gave his writings on Goethe an aura of urgency, even intimacy, and made him regard Goethe’s work as a composite unity in which all parts—poetry, dramas, novels, scientific writings, correspondence, and recorded conversations—illuminate one another and form a coherence that manifests itself down to the choice of syllables, vowels, and consonants. Cottrell saw the nodal point of Goethe’s oeuvre in a “visual reasoning” and “morphological thinking” that apprehends images... (preview truncated at 150 words.)
