A Study of the Functions of Physical Education in Higher Education

The place of physical education in American higher education has been largely taken for granted until within the past decade. Recently the claims that have been made, both by physical educators and by college administrators, for the functions of physical education at this educational level have been so contradictory and confusing as to raise serious doubts about the outcomes that could be expected in this area. The problem of the present study was, therefore, to discover the significant issues in the controversies, to seek evidence supporting representative opposing views, and then to suggest the position on these issues that holds greatest promise for higher education.
