The Australian philosopher John Passmore has rewritten (“sometimes very extensively”) a number of lectures and seminars, almost all of them originally presented between 1967 and 1970 to British audiences. In The Philosophy of Teaching we have the published product of his labors. Interested in education initially as a practicing teacher, and later as a professional philosopher and friend of the highly influential British analytic philosopher of education R. S. Peters, Passmore considers the field a difficult one in which to write a “good book.” By this he understands a book that is philosophical but significant for education, avoids being banal or fanatical, and manages to mark out a “middle way.” Does Passmore succeed in writing a “good book”? From his standpoint, he does. But how acceptable are his criteria, as he spells them out? Passmore distances himself from the two favored methods of philosophizing about education.
