Girls and Science is the ninth International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) monograph by former IEA Spencer Foundation Fellows. There are currently ten volumes in the series, which probably constitutes the most extensive collection of research monographs dealing with the theoretical and methodological issues in cross-national studies of school achievement available in English. Each year for five years (1971-1976) IEA awarded four Spencer Fellowships on the basis of open competition among educational researchers in some twenty countries—the IEA nations. The fellowships were at Torsten Husen's Institute of International Education, University of Stockholm, where the recipient was encouraged to conduct secondary analyses of the national probability samples of student achievement data in the IEA data bank. This research archive contains school achievement data in the seven subjects commonly taught in the schools of most countries (mathematics, reading, mother tongue literature, science, civics, and French and English as foreign languages)...
